Cutter Rush lends a hand in Dutch Harbor

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Rush is continuing to build their relationship with the community of Unalaska during their mid-patrol break.

Seventeen volunteers bundled up and headed over to the Unalaska Senior Center to help dig out the citizens after a series of several snow storms left residents unable to open their front door.

Lt. j.g. Rick Mozolic, Ensign Jenna Carpenter, Ensign Austin King, Ensign Mia Reizun, Ensign Jeff Schoknecht, Ensign Johnny Zeng, Chief Warrant Officer Erik Peterson, Chief Warrant Officer Ifong Lee, Chief Petty Officer Jason Bitterman, Petty Officer 2nd Class Aldrich Adams, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jason Baldwin, Petty Officer 3rd Class Chase Gillyard, Seaman Sean Flory, Seaman Alexander Waller, Seaman Candido Bousquet, Seaman Rachel Jefferson, and Seaman Lauren Steenson eagerly volunteered for shoveling duty. 

The mayor of Unalaska, Shirley Marquardt, greeted the crew on Jan. 7 at the Senior Center and described the work that needed to be done. The volunteers shoveled out fire exits that were covered in nearly four feet of snow around the Unalaska Senior Center, as well as several vehicles that had been covered in the snow storms that frequent Unalaska.  Additionally, volunteers took to the streets, shoveling out three local school bus stops and four houses where senior citizens reside.  After several hours of shoveling, the Unalaska Senior Center provided doughnuts and coffee to the Hawaii-based crew as they thawed out. 

Rush continues to execute its core missions on the frigid waters of the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska, including maritime law enforcement, safety of life at sea and marine environmental protection.
