>On a sunny day just south of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, CGC Acushnet and CGC Alex Haley met to conduct towing exercises.

Due to the abundance of lines and heavy tension inherent in a towing evolution, it benefits everyone to practice this skill in good weather before having to do it in bad weather. Towing and small boat evolutions are two capabilities that Coast Guard cutters need to excel at, since it allows them a high degree of flexibility when conducting Law Enforcement boardings, Search and Rescues, and Personnel Transfers, to name just few items.

Both Acushnet and Alex Haley conduct Bering Sea patrols on a regular basis, so they need to keep these skills sharp, just in case. The evolution went smoothly, with both the Alex Haley and Acushnet taking each other under tow while Alex Haley’s HH-65 Dolphin helicopter watched on.
