Since the stand down of the Polar Operations Division, Air Station Kodiak’s ALPAT has taken the lead in deploying HH-65C helicopters above the Arctic Circle. The crew of 6509, deployed aboard CGC Alex Haley, just completed 22 continuous days above 66 degrees 30 minutes North and earned the Arctic Service Medal. With no major resupply port for Alex Haley, the air crew performed two helicopter resupplies from Kotzebue, delivering over 11,000 pounds of groceries, parts and mail via sling load. Other highlights included medical evacuations of personnel to both Kotzebue and Barrow, night flights under the Aurora Borealis, Aids to Navigation work and an invitation to a traditional whale feast in Barrow after a successful hunt by the natives.
