>Canoe Tug of War!

At this year’s Valdez Polar Bear Splash-In, Station Valdez struck again! This time instead of battle CG vs. CG, we battled against the local firefighters to defend the Captain’s Cup! In the CG canoe BMC Wagner, MK1 Daoust, GM3 Dukowitz, and BM3 Johnson paddled like they had never paddled before which resulted in the winning of the tug of war! The activity was a fun opening for the “Polar Bear Splash-In” event as well as a great demonstration of the partnership Coast Guard Station Valdez has with the local Valdez Fire Dept. As a reservist at the station and the Captain at the Valdez Fire Dept., BM2 Jennifer Stubblefield coordinated the event and serves as a liaison between the local CG and fire dept. Besides participating in the canoe tug of war, the station also had a few guys and gals participate in the Splash-in as well. Although none won the costume contest, SK3 Daniel Shader made the front page of the local paper for his wicked belly flop into the frigid waters!
