Deck Watch is a five to seven minute radio program featuring Coast Guard news across the state of Alaska.

The feature this week is an interview with Coast Guard Cmdr. Benjamin Hawkins, the commanding officer with Marine Safety Unit Valdez, about the oil spill exercise in Valdez.

The annual Prince William Sound oil spill response exercise was held in Valdez Sept. 27-28, 2011.  The yearly exercises are held to practice a unified response to a significant environmental impact from an oil spill into Prince William Sound.  A unified response to any maritime environmental impact from an oil spill is essential to ensure the proper response methods and expertise are utilized during the clean-up response.  The Port of Valdez in Prince William Sound is the home of the terminus of the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline.
