In ohter news Coast Guard crews are busy throughout Alaska and have been spreading holiday cheer. Dinners for seniors have been hosted in several communities and Santa is making the rounds delivered by Coast Guard cutters and aircraft in lieu of his sleigh.

Dec. 11 – A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued a stranded surfer from a 200-foot cliff near Fossil Beach following a report from the Alaska State Troopers Sunday. The man was delivered safely to Kodiak with no injuries and resumed surfing the next day.

Dec. 11 – In Juneau Adm. Thomas Ostebo, commander Coast Guard District 17, and Capt. Scott Bornemann, commander Coast Guard Sector Juneau, hosted Air Force Lt. Gen. Stephen Hoog Sunday. Hoog recently assumed command of Department of Defense operations in Alaska.

Dec. 12 – Also Sunday, the Morning Cedar arrived to Unalaska escorted by the Coast Guard Cutter Sherman. Coast Guard personnel from Marine Safety Detachment Unalaska inspected the steering system repaired at-sea Dec. 8 by technicians who were delivered via Coast Guard helicopter. The ship’s crew intends to make permanent repairs and continue their voyage to Tokyo to deliver a shipment of packaged timber.

Dec. 14 – Coast Guard personnel remain on scene at Ocean Yard Dock near Cordova to monitor pollution containment and ensure discharged oil is recovered effectively as Global Diving and Salvage personnel work to clean up the 135-foot landing craft Sound Developer Wednesday. The Sound Developer was refloated at the dock in Cordova last week and towed to Ocean Yard Dock where crews can safely and more easily access the vessel to complete the clean up. Upon completion of pollution removal efforts, the City of Cordova will assume responsibility of the Sound Developer for final disposition.

Dec. 14 – A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued three men from a cabin at Sevenfathom Bay Wednesday following a report that they were overdue on a hunting trip. They had departed Sitka Saturday and were supposed to return in time for work Wednesday. Their 17-foot skiff reportedly broke free of its mooring stranding them. Sitka Search and Rescue also launched a small boat to search local public launches for the men. The Coast Guard reminds mariners and outdoorsmen to take multiple forms of communication with you whether in the backcountry or on the water.
