Mar. 14 – Coast Guard sponsored musher Ken Anderson and his dog team finished the 2012 Iditarod race in 12th place March 14. Anderson, a 12 time Iditarod veteran, had a strong and steady pace, but several race decisions slowed his progress and kept him out of the top ten finishers this year.

Mar. 16 – Watchstanders at District 17 Command Center received a report of a 27-year-old female suffering from an appendicitis in the village of Nanwalek March 16. Commercial medevac services were unable to provide transportation due to weather conditions at the time. The Coast Guard duty flight surgeon was consulted and recommended the medevac to Homer. Air Station Kodiak launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and crew who successfully transported the patient to commercial medevac services in Homer in stable condition. The patient was further medevaced to Anchorage for evaluation.

Mar. 16 to 18 – Rear Adm. Thomas Ostebo, commander 17th Coast Guard District, and Commodore Thomas Mallison, Auxiliary vice national commodore, attended the annual District 17 Auxiliary’s 2012 summit Sunday in Anchorage. Mallison, a resident of Bear Lake, Mich., is the second highest official in the Coast Guard’s uniformed civilian volunteer component, with 35,000 members nationwide, including 460 in Alaska. There are 14 flotillas in Alaska covering most of the state who conduct vessel safety checks, boating safety outreach, search and rescue patrols and training with their active duty counterparts.
