VALDEZ, Alaska – The Coast Guard presented Lt. Cmdr. Erin Williams, executive officer Marine Safety Unit Valdez, with this year’s Capt. Dorothy Stratton Leadership Award March 5 at the 2012 Women’s Leadership Symposium in Washington D.C.

Williams was recognized for her effort to improve the lives of Coast Guardsmen in Valdez and promote a positive Coast Guard image.  This was the 25th Silver Anniversary Annual Sea Service Leadership Association Women’s Leadership Symposium and the theme was “United in Service: Our Global Impact”. Williams’ actions at her local unit embodied that theme.

Williams championed the idea of combining six separate Valdez-based Coast Guard units into Cost Guard Forces Valdez thus consolidating many communication, logistics and administrate support functions and streamlining joint operations.

Valdez is about six hours from Anchorage, the nearest large city, prompting Williams to establish a satellite Coast  Guard Exchange to provide members with necessary uniform items and small goods and reducing the high cost of living. Williams also worked with Valdez-based Coast guard spouse and assisted them in receiving in home childcare certifications to provide Coast Guard members with an affordable childcare resource in the area.

Williams coordinated community outreach that lead to the Coast Guard sponsorship of Iditarod musher Ken Anderson. This partnership provided global exposure of the Coast Guard to over two million viewers of the race and promoted Team Coast Guard in several remote Alaskan communities.

“Coast Guard Forces Valdez has been honored with the opportunity to serve alongside Lt. Cmdr. Williams, and we’re ecstatic she’s received the recognition she so richly deserves,” said Cmdr. Benjamin Hawkins, commanding officer of MSU Valdez and Forces Valdez senior coordinating officer.   “Each and every day she exemplifies our core values serving both her shipmates and their families.”

Williams’ dedication to the Coast Guard personnel in Valdez has resulted in lasting improvements in the quality of life for her shipmates and their families and serves as an example of inspirational leadership.

Coast Guard Forces Valdez includes MSU Valdez, Station Valdez, Sector Field Office Valdez, Electronics Support Detachment Valdez, the Coast Guard Cutter Long Island and Health-Safety-Work Life Detachment Valdez.
