The Coast Guard Base Kodiak MWR division has been announced as a finalist for the 2013 National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association. This year’s proud sponsor of the Gold Medal Awards program is Musco Lighting LLC.

Founded in 1965, the Gold Medal Awards program honors communities in the U.S. that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition. Applications are separated into seven classes, with five classes based on population, one class for armed forces recreation communities and the State Park System Class awarded every other year. This year, AAPRA and NRPA will award the prestigious and highly sought State Park System Class Gold Medal award.

“Our MWR employees both military and civilian excel in developing team momentum, enthusiasm and pride,” said Joe Bower, director, Coast Guard Base Kodiak MWR. “Our MWR team recognizes the many benefits of a spirited team that provides customer service to all our military members and their families. They are eager to assume greater responsibilities and assist across the Base wherever they may be needed for programming or special functions. Our future success will be inspired with the team’s vision and as the director I am honored to work with such a wonderful group of dedicated employees. Our motto “Your Fun is Our Business” sums up all of our teams efforts as a finalist for the NRPA Gold Medal Award.”

The division is comprised of 125 people in the summer and scale back to 90 people in the winter. The division manages several base facilities including the gym, boat house and golf course as well as providing recreation equipment and 10 major events a year. These events range from an annual eco-challenge race event to hosting USO concerts and most recently a carnival and toy giveaway sponsored by the Toy Industry Foundation and Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

The base MWR division is a finalist in the Armed Forces recreation category. The base Kodiak MWR division joins three other finalists in the class that will compete for grand honors this year.
The agencies are judged on their ability to address the needs of those they serve through the collective energies of citizens, staff and elected officials.
