Coast Guard celebrates 227 years of service to the Nation

Coast Guard members from across Alaska share why they joined during this Coast Guard Day. Why did you join the Coast Guard?

All my life I have been in love with the water. I bought my first boat eight years before my first car. I wanted to serve our country, and to me, there was no better choice than the Coast Guard. I have enjoyed every day and have no regrets.
-Rear Adm. Michael McAllister, commander, 17th Coast Guard District

I joined because it’s all about the people, and it’s all about the mission. So, we’ve got great missions and we’ve got great people. It doesn’t get any better than this.
-Capt. Sean Mackenzie, commander, Coast Guard Sector Anchorage

I actually left a Fortune 500 company to join the Coast Guard to see the world. But, I also really joined to help others, whether it is search and rescue or whether it is educating folks or helping others.  That is why I joined.
-Cmdr. Stacey Mersel, deputy commander, Sector Anchorage

I joined the Coast Guard to serve the nation at sea, and being in command of the Coast Guard Cutter Liberty has allowed me to work with some of the finest people our nation has to offer. – Lt. Justin Fellers, commanding officer of the Liberty

I joined the Coast Guard to help my chances of becoming a wildlife agent with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries whenever I decide to get out.

I joined the Coast Guard because I wanted to be a part of a life-saving service. I really wanted my family to be proud of what I do.
