National Hispanic Heritage Month: The Shaffers

During my husband’s career I have learned to be very supportive about his decisions on where he wants to go in the Coast Guard. Even though it’s very difficult to move around, get a new job, and make new friends every couple years, it’s been an amazing experience.

I look at the contributions that have been made by Hispanics throughout the years and I’m proud to be part of an organization that celebrates our differences in culture and history.

Being part of the Coast Guard gives me a sense of pride and self accomplishment because not everyone gets the privilege to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard, especially for me because of where I come from. My background being in this organization has exceeded the expectations of my family and friends back home.

The Coast Guard has taught me the importance of multi-tasking and being able to adapt to change. There has been a lot of difference between the different jobs that I have worked, and adaptation has always been part of it. I’ve learned how to adapt from my personal experiences, and also from the people who work around me.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, five members of Coast Guard 17th District will be featured Sept. 29 through Oct. 3.
